BRONX, N.Y.—Congressman Charles Rangel of New York’s 13th District will host a business and innovation conference on Thursday, April 4, from 9:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Lehman College’s Lovinger Theatre. Dr. Rebecca Blank, acting secretary of the U.S. Department of Commerce, will deliver the keynote address. Other presenters include David Hinson, national director of the Minority Business Development Agency (MBDA). This event is free and open to the community; however, registration is required. Register at rangel.house.gov.
CUNY Senior Vice Chancellor Jay Hershenson will deliver opening remarks and introduce the speakers. Dr. Blank is a key member of President Obama’s economic team, working to implement the administration’s top economic priorities to increase economic growth and accelerate job growth.
In her address, Dr. Blank will focus on three areas: the importance of research, innovation and entrepreneurship to long-term American competitiveness; how innovation and entrepreneurship drive job creation; and the steps the Obama Administration has taken to foster the innovation and entrepreneurship that brought the economy back from the Great Recession, including such programs as the Recovery Act and the i6 Challenge, as well as other grants, contracting and trade opportunities.
As Director of the MBDA, Hinson oversees a national network of 40 MBDA Business Centers. The MBDA is focused on expanding the U.S. economy and creating new jobs by promoting the growth and global competitiveness of large, medium and small businesses that are minority-owned. Following his address, there will be a question and answer session. In addition, business, contracting and lending consultants will be available from 11 a.m.-1 p.m. to answer individual questions and provide information.
The Bronx Small Business Development Center (SBDC), which is housed on the Lehman College campus, will also participate in the conference. Launched in 1987, the Bronx SBDC has served more than 14,000 businesses, helping them invest over $120 million in the area’s economy.
A senior college within the City University of New York, the Lehman campus is located on Goulden Avenue and Bedford Park Boulevard West in the Northwest Bronx, and is accessible by bus as well as the #4 and “D” subway lines. Parking is available for a $5 fee.
