Statement by Chancellor Matthew Goldstein on the Approval of the 2013-14 New York State Budget

March 29, 2013 | The University

We commend Governor Andrew Cuomo and the New York State Senate and Assembly for approving a budget for 2013-14 that ensures continued stability for University funding and provides significant gains in programs and services to further strengthen access to high quality educational opportunity.  In particular, new and enhanced support for State operating aid for the community colleges responds effectively to increased student enrollments and the needs of business and the public sector for an educated workforce.  For the first time, State funding is provided for the Accelerated Study in Associate Programs (ASAP) initiative established by CUNY to reform community college education and boost graduation rates.  In addition, there is funding for the “Next Generation NY Job Linkage Program” to help improve collaborations with industry.  We are also pleased that the Legislature approved the Governor’s inclusion of the University in a new CUNY 2020 capital improvement program aimed at stimulating economic development.  Restorations were made available for childcare, the SEEK program, and new funding was allocated for worker education.  We look forward to continuing to work with State officials to ensure that investments in public higher education will substantially augment our competitive position within the higher education marketplace.
