Martha Weithman (’00) Wins Appellate Ruling on Rent Protection for SRO Residents

Alum Martha Weithman (’00) won a unanimous ruling from the Appellate Division, First Department, finding that a person who lives in a single room occupancy building (SRO) for at least six months, becomes a permanent tenant protected by the Rent Stabilization Law, regardless of whether the tenant has a lease.  Weithman is the director of the Goddard Riverside SRO Law Project, a high impact non-profit, which has protected the rights of low income tenants residing in residential hotels, who have been especially vulnerable to abusive treatment as New York neighborhoods have gentrified.
