Alum Farrah Diaz-Tello (’09), a staff attorney with the National Advocates for Pregnant Women, spoke with The Altoona Mirror about the case of a woman in Pennsylvania who allegedly overdosed while nine months pregnant.
“Clearly, no one is saying it’s a good idea for women to be doing drugs during pregnancy,” Diaz-Tello said. She continued that medical professionals have long stated that exposing drug-addicted pregnant woman to criminal penalties if they seek treatment is detrimental to the health of both the mother and the child. “Ultimately, it’s bad for women and bad for babies,” Diaz-Tello said.
