Medgar Evers College and Turner Construction Company (Turner) recently announced that in partnership with Medgar Evers College, Turner will offer an advanced Certificate in Construction Management for industry small business owners beginning October 8.
The partnership between the Turner School of Construction Management and the College began in 2008 while Turner was managing construction of the College’s Academic Building 1. The training course was an eight-week, 16-session program taught by Turner staff and industry leaders, and which covered one subject per class. Classes were taught on the College’s campus and 43 small business owners graduated. The following year, the partnership launched the advanced TSCM program, which covers fewer topics, and spends six to ten sessions on each.
“Our ongoing partnership with Medgar Evers on the Turner School is a good example of how we strive to make a difference in the communities where we build,” said Turner’s New York office senior vice president and general manager Charlie Murphy. “We’re proud of our people who volunteer to teach the courses, and we’re proud of the small business owners who come to further develop their skills and build business relationships that can enhance their viability in the industry. We look forward to working with them.”
“The learning opportunities that students will receive from Turner’s highly-trained instructors in this Advanced Certificate in Construction Management will yield great benefits for small business owners and the communities in which they operate,” said School of Professional and Community Development Dean Dr. Simone Rodriguez-Dorestant. “Turner is a great partner for Medgar Evers College, and as practitioners in the field, they fully understand the value of qualified professionals and are committed to a quality learning experience.”
“Students in the Advanced Certificate in Construction Management program not only gain knowledge in how to manage a construction project from conception to completion,” said Adult and Continuing Education, Director Jonathan Bissell. “They are given the opportunity to tour a working construction site and to witness firsthand what they have been learning in the classroom.”
