On Saturday, September 21, 2013, CUNY Moot Court hosted the oral argument component of the Eighteenth Annual CUNY Law School Moot Court Summer Competition. The team of John Paul Guyette (‘15) and James King (‘15) won the final round of arguments before New York Supreme Court Justice Sharon A.M. Aarons, CUNY School of Law Dean Michelle Anderson, New York Court of Appeals Judge Jenny Rivera, and CUNY Moot Court Alum Julie Milner. The team of Rebecca Arian and Patrick Tyrrell finished in second place, and John Paul Guyette won the Best Oral Argument Award for the final round.
The Best Brief Award also went to the team of John Paul Guyette and James King. Kristen Nipper (‘15) won the Second-Place Brief Award, and the team of Emily Farrell (‘15) and Joseph Schofield (‘15) had the Third-Place Brief. Melissa Molfetas (‘14) won the Best Oral Argument Award for the Preliminary Rounds.
The Annual CUNY Moot Court Summer Competition and Advocacy Training program is held every year for CUNY law students interested in improving their advocacy skills and in joining CUNY Moot Court. Students are given a case record and must write a substantial appellate brief based upon their own research. After each team submits its appellate brief in late summer, the students argue the legal issues in two rounds against other teams before a panel of judges. Students who meet a qualifying score in the competition are invited to become members of CUNY Moot Court.
The Summer Competition is organized and run by current Moot Court members. Junie Chang (‘14) did a superb job as the 2013 Summer Competition Coordinator. She was joined by the excellent Summer Competition Committee: Maria DeCastro (‘14), Kurtis Falcone (‘14), and Elizabeth Sandercock (‘14). Current first-year and third-year students served as bailiffs and timekeepers, and brief and oral argument judges included alum, faculty, attorneys, and currently sitting judges.
