York College Hosts Intellectual Heavyweights at Black Male Initiative Conference on Race, Law and Justice
York College proudly hosted the Eighth Annual CUNY Black Male Initiative Conference, titled “Race, Law and Justice,” as intellectual heavyweights from around the country descended on its Jamaica, Queens campus for a packed day of keynote talks, film screenings, and panel discussions focusing on the racial history of the United States.
Students and other attendees learned about the history of race and racism in criminal justice, education, housing, residential segregation, employment and other social arenas from Juan Cartagena, one of the nation’s leading civil rights lawyers and President of LatinoJustice / PRLDEF, formerly the Puerto Rican Legal Defense and Educational Fund.
Other prominent thinkers to speak at the Conference included Paul Butler, one of the nation’s leading critical race theorists and a Professor at Georgetown University Law Center, as well as Ron Daniels, the former leader of the Center for Constitutional Rights and a Distinguished Lecturer at York College.
“These are thorny, pressing and uniquely American issues,” said Dr. Marcia Keizs, President of York College. “All of us at York were honored to facilitate robust discussion among some of the leading minds of our time.”
No-holds-barred discussion was indeed the norm of the day, as the Conference covered everything from African American and Latino / Hispanic resistance to systems of oppression and exclusion, to the vestiges of slavery and segregation in contemporary American society and the history of the ongoing struggle for equality in our society.
