Lehman College Kicks Off Three-Day Jazz Festival Nov. 20-22

jazz festival 2011BRONX, N.Y.— Aspiring and established jazz musicians of all age groups will converge on the Lehman College campus for the fifth annual Johnny Pacheco Latin Music and Jazz Festival, which will run from 10 a.m.-4 p.m. Wednesday, November 20-22, in the Lovinger Theatre. Additional performances will take place on Thursday and Friday evening at 7:30 p.m. Admission is free and open to the public.

The Festival brings together middle and high school jazz bands, vocal jazz groups, and Latin jazz ensembles from the area for an impressive three-day jam session. On November 20, at 12 p.m. there will be a panel discussion, titled “Careers in the Music Profession,” followed by performances by the Lehman Faculty Jazz Ensemble and the Pacheco Festival Student Ensemble at 2 p.m. and 3 p.m. respectively.

The Brazilian percussionist Annette Aguilar will take the stage with her ensemble, String Beans, on November 21 at 10 a.m. Performances will continue at 2 p.m. with the University of Rhode Island Jazz Band, who made an appearance at the Newport Jazz Festival. The day’s events will conclude with an evening concert by the Bronx Conexion Latin Jazz Band at 7:30 p.m.

The third and final day of the Festival will include performances by Richard Boukas and Quarteto Moderno at 1 p.m., a workshop with musician Rick Faulkner at 2 p.m., and an improvisation clinic led by legendary vibraphonist Mike Mainieri at 3 p.m.

The Festival will end with a special concert with Mike Mainieri, featuring the Lehman College Jazz Band under the direction of Allan Molnar and special guest Kurt Gartner.
