Cross Culture Class Covers Vigil for Typhoon Victims

Typhoon vigilThe CUNY J-School’s Cross Cultural class headed to Woodside, Queens to cover a vigil and fundraiser for victims of Typhoon Haiyan.

The Bayanihan Filipino Community Center hosted the event, and around 50 community members came to talk about how to get funds and resources to loved ones back in the Philippines. They also voiced grievances with how the Filipino government has handled the preparation and aftermath of the storm.

Students used their smart phones to shoot, record, and take notes during the event, and later published anecdotal multimedia postcards on the Cowbird platform.

The Cross Cultural Reporting course, taught by Jesse Hardman, is for 3rd semester international concentration students, and requires coverage of a specific immigrant community in New York. The students in the class are Susan Armitage, Skyler Reid, Amanda Dingyuan Hou, Brock Stoneham, Kathleen Culliton, Catherine Featherston, Aine Pennello, and Bobbi Misick.
