Professor and Chairperson Charles Nemeth in the Department of Security, Fire and Emergency Management delivered two lectures at Bahcesehir University in Istanbul Turkey this summer. The lectures are an integral step in establishing relationships with Turkey.
Professor Nemeth’s first lecture featured John Jay’s Center for Private Security and Safety, the Newtown experience and John Jay’s response to the tragedy. During his second visit, the issue of stadium security and emerging violence at sports venues was considered. Dr. Nemeth emphasized the best practices of the industry, the expertise of John Jay’s faculty and staff in the matter of sports security and the unique contributions the Center for Private Security and Safety could make in this specialized area. Currently being developed, in cooperation with Bahcesehir, is a Certificate program for sports venue security specialists. Other presenters included Lord Ian Blair, who held the highest position as Commissioner of Police at Scotland Yard for nearly 29 years in London England.
The events were the stimulus for an invigorated dialogue about “faculty and student exchanges, laying out the possibility of an articulations and cooperative agreements with Bahcesehir University relative to John Jay’s professional education training programs offered by the Center for Private Security and Safety and the College’s new, online graduate program in Security Management,” said Nemeth. The “critical importance of Turkey as a bridge to Middle Eastern hotspots cannot be overemphasized” explained Nemeth since “both Turkey and the United States are strong allies dedicated to democratic ideals and its university and college system always yearning for best practices in matters of safety and security.” Bahcesehir University- a modern progressive institutions sees “John Jay College as an essential partner in its future development and we are delighted to be part of the evolution”, Nemeth concludes.
