Raul Pinto ’10, staff attorney for the American Civil Liberties Union of North Carolina, was recently interviewed by CNN en Español about the findings of a report commissioned by the Department of Justice to analyze traffic stops by the Alamance County Sheriff’s Office. The report showed that racial profiling of Latino drivers is occurring. The report authors say that Latinos are cited for traffic violations at a rate more than six times higher than whites.
Pinto has urged the sheriff to reach a settlement with the Justice Department ensuring the civil rights of Latinos are protected. Previously, Pinto successfully worked with the Jackson County Sheriff’s Office on similar issues.
