12 Graduates Awarded State Government Positions Through Inaugural Program

NEW YORK, NY- January 7, 2014 – Baruch College’s  School of Public Affairs is proud to announce that 12 of its recent Masters in Public Administration graduates have been selected to participate in the inaugural Excelsior Service Fellowship Program, through the Office of New York Governor Andrew M. Cuomo.

This new initiative has brought a total of 80 talented graduates from 11 colleges, universities, graduate, law and professional schools in New York State into government service.

In a press release issued by the Governor’s Office, Governor Cuomo said, “Recruiting new ideas, fresh talent, and energy is a great way to transform state government as we continue to build a new New York. That is exactly what the Excelsior Service Fellows will provide.” This fellowship program builds on the success of the Empire State Fellows program that attracts early-career professionals to high-level positions within state government, and the New NY Leaders Internship Program that offers hundreds of college students an opportunity to work in state government.

Excelsior Fellows work full-time alongside senior members of the administration and play a policy-influencing role in New York State with the opportunity to work on the most pressing issues of the day.

“These fellowships offer recent graduates the opportunity to learn a lot about state government in a very focused period of time,” says David Birdsell, Dean of Baruch’s School of Public Affairs. “This is the most diverse school of Public Affairs in New York State. To be able to slot people into the leadership pipeline is the perfect way for us to fulfill our mission and show exactly how good the graduates of this [Master’s in Public Administration] program are.”

The selection process involved faculty and administrator nominations, an application in which the students had to articulate their interest and qualifications via a statement of purpose, and an interview during which a committee assessed their interest, qualifications, drive, and potential for success via a variety of traditional, behavioral, and scenario-based questions.

In addition to Baruch College, participating schools include Harvard, the Sage Colleges, Syracuse University, Morehouse College, Columbia University, Rockefeller College at University of Albany, Albany Law School, Fordham Law School, NYU Wagner and NYU Law School.
