A recent New York Daily News article reports on the decision of the California State Supreme Court to allow Sergio Garcia, who entered the U.S. illegally as a teen and has passed the California Bar Exam, to be admitted to the bar.
Cesar Vargas (‘11), who is also featured in the article, hopes that his own case before the New York State Supreme Court Appellate Division will be bolstered by California’s decision. Vargas, an undocumented Mexican immigrant, passed the New York State Bar exam on his first try and has been rated as a “stellar candidate” by the New York State Supreme Court Committee. Vargas called the California ruling “a huge, huge step.”
