Statement from Interim Chancellor William P. Kelly On Governor Cuomo’s Proposed New York State Executive Budget

January 22, 2014 | The University

“We are reviewing the 2014-15 New York State Executive Budget proposed by Governor Andrew Cuomo and its impact on The City University of New York.  CUNY is experiencing record enrollments and today serves 271,000 degree credit students and 250,000 adult and continuing education students, including more high academic achievers than at any time in its history. The recommended budget provides financial stability and a number of important opportunities to build upon the University’s strengths and assets.  We are appreciative for the renewed focus on critical maintenance for existing campus facilities so essential to the modernization and safety of CUNY buildings.  We are particularly encouraged by the Governor’s efforts to strengthen the STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics) pipeline through a new scholarship program for high school students.  We are pleased that a second round of CUNY 2020 projects is scheduled, allowing the campuses to pursue important job creation and economic development initiatives. We look forward to working closely with the Office of the Governor and the New York State Legislature to further discuss the University’s budgetary needs as the review process continues.”
