Award honors outstanding Macaulay Honors College students committed to public service
Suprita Datta, a sophomore in the Macaulay Honors College at City College, is one of four Macaulay students awarded William R. Kenan Scholarships, which are given for demonstrated commitment to service and civic engagement.
The program offers Kenan Scholars immersive learning opportunities as well as material support for student-developed cooperative endeavors.
“I hope to use my scholarship to start an ongoing conversation about internationally marginalized populations and the challenges they face,” said Ms. Datta, a premed student who is also majoring in international studies with a focus on conflict stabilization. “Currently, I am working on creating a panel event concerning the status of Haitian communities within the Dominican Republic.”
A native of India whose family emigrated to the United States when she was five, Ms. Datta hopes to work in global healthcare policy in post-conflict and developing societies.
The Bronx resident spent last summer traveling with Macaulay’s Global Brigades chapter to Panama in order to provide healthcare to indigenous communities.
The William R. Kenan Jr. Charitable Trust established the Kenan Scholars Program in the aftermath of the September 11 terrorist attacks. Its goals are to incubate and foster social vision and courage; to build identity and intention as agents of change; and to draw meaningful lines of connection between scholarship and the communities in which we live.
