Jazz for Lehman College: The Harlem Quartet at San Juan, Puerto Rico’s Center for the Performing Arts

April 17, 2014 | Lehman College

On Friday, May 2, 2014, along with Puerto Rico’s Pro-Arte Musical, the Lehman College Foundation will co-host the Harlem Quartet at San Juan, Puerto Rico’s Center for the Performing Arts in Santurce.

“Jazz for Lehman College” was established to raise funds for scholarships of the City University of New York. Located in the North Bronx, Lehman serves one of the largest Puerto Rican and other Latino college populations in the United States.

About The Harlem Quartet
Praised for its “panache” by the New York Times, the quartet’s mission is to advance diversity in classical music, engaging young and new audiences through the discovery and presentation of varied repertoire that includes works by minority composers.

This young quartet just received two Grammy nominations — one for the Best Jazz Instrumental Album category for the CD Hot House with Chick Corea & Gary Burton, the other for Best Instrumental Composition for Mozart Goes Dancing, a selection that features the quartet.

In the Spring of 2012, the members toured South Africa under the State Department’s auspices. The quartet performed in June 2012, as part of the world premiere of West Side Story for String Quartet and Orchestra with the Chicago Sinfonietta, Mei-Ann Chen conducting. They also performed, by invitation, with Itzhak Perlman at the Metropolitan Museum of Art.

The Harlem Quartet has been featured on WNBC, CNN, the Today Show, WQXR-FM, and the News Hour with Jim Lehrer. They have performed for President Barack Obama and First Lady Michelle Obama at the White House, and appeared Christmas morning on NBC’s Today Show. They made their European debut in October 2009 performing at the residence of the U.S. ambassador to the U.K., and returned to Europe as guest artists and faculty members of the Musica Mundi International Festival in Belgium. In early 2011 they were featured guest artists at the Panama Jazz Festival in Panama City. In June 2012 they made their debut with the Montreal Jazz Festival.

The Harlem Quartet is the Resident Ensemble in the New England Conservatory’s Professional String Quartet Training Program. Each member of the quartet is also a seasoned solo artist, having appeared with such orchestras as the New York Philharmonic, the Boston Pops, and the Atlanta, Baltimore, Cleveland, Detroit, National, New World, and Pittsburgh symphony orchestras.

As in years past, Lehman College counts on your support for the success of this event. Sponsorship of this important endeavor will be recognized on the invitation, in advance news coverage, and during the evening’s activities. $10,000 makes you a Chair (20 tickets); $5,000 makes you a Co-chair (15 tickets); $3,000 a Master (10 tickets); $2,000 a Scholar (6 tickets); $1,500 a Fellow (4 tickets); and $75 for individual tickets.
