April 18, 2014 | Bronx Community College
This year’s event seeks to raise awareness about health challenges plaguing its home borough
April 18, 2014, Bronx, New York – On Saturday, May 3rd, over 1,000 participants are expected to run — and walk — for their lives. That’s the date of “Run the Bronx,” the 36th Annual Roscoe C. Brown Jr. Hall of Fame 10K and 5K Runs and 2-mile Walk. A host of local healthcare providers will also be a part of this signature event for the Bronx Community College campus and the borough it calls home, re-enforcing the serious concern behind the day’s high spirits: the fitness and well-being of the people of the Bronx.
The BCC Nursing Department, whose practical nursing program was recently noted for having the best licensing exam pass rates in the entire state, will offer free blood pressure test. Other participants will include:
- The American Cancer Society, which will provide information on cancer screening
- The New York University School of Dentistry, promoting healthy teeth and dental checkups
- The Morris Heights Health Center and United Healthcare, who will offer free HIV testing, blood pressure tests and glucose level monitoring
- Citibank, with advice on “healthy financial saving”
Instrumental in arranging this health fair is Healthfirst. The non-profit managed care organization is also a Run the Bronx sponsor.
The official start time is 10 a.m. , rain or shine. The event begins and ends on the historic landmark campus of Bronx Community College, located at 2155 University Avenue, near 181st Street in the Bronx. Through April 26th, pre-registration is $25 for the general public and $40 thereafter.
