NEW YORK, NY- May 22, 2014 – Gilad Harel, Adjunct Professor in the Weissman School, was recently recognized among “40 Under 40: Professors Who Inspire” by NerdScholar.com. The inaugural list recognizes US college professors for “cultivating passion in their students.”
Harel, Adjunct Professor of Music, is a musicologist whose primary research focuses on the choral music of J.S. Bach. In addition to baroque vocal music, his musical interests include styles ranging from jazz to Israeli popular music, as well as opera, renaissance music, and Scandinavian metal genres. Harel has lectured at Brandeis University and previously taught at the Allegro Music School in Natick, Mass. Outside of the college classroom, Harel has been committed to adult and continuing education and has given talks at various establishments, including the Hebrew Home at Riverdale and the FiveStar Premier Residence of Yonkers. He is an experienced jazz pianist and tenor vocalist who has performed with various groups in the New York/New England area.
Harel will also be recognized with the Presidential Excellence Award along with faculty members: Nancy Aires, Charlotte Brooks, and Peter Gregory, during Baruch’s 49th Commencement on May 27.
NerdScholar is a financial literacy website that empowers students to make smart financial choices. The website walks students through the process of choosing a best-fit college, applying for financial aid, taking out student loans, paying back those loans, and landing a job. The NerdScholar FAFSA Guide, funded by a grant from the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, provides students with a step-by-step tutorial to use while applying for federal financial aid.
Methodology:These 40 inspirational professors were nominated based on their ability to captivate and engage students in the classroom, desire to interact with students outside of class and collaborate on research projects. Nominations were collected through student and faculty recommendations, articles such as the Princeton Review’s Best Professors list and other pieces highlighting universities with outstanding professors, supplemented by crowd-sourced review sites such as RateMyProfessors.com and CourseRank.com.
