Medgar’s Sonia Wilson to Be Honored by the WNBA’s New York Liberty

Congratulations are in order for Sonia Wilson of the Medgar Evers College (MEC) Development Office.  Friday, July 11th, Sonia will be honored as an Inspiring Woman by the WNBA’s New York Liberty on the floor of Madison Square Garden during the evening’s home game.  In partnership with UPS, the New York Liberty’s “Inspiring Women” initiative “celebrates women who have demonstrated outstanding business leadership”.  The program is a league-wide effort with teams across the country recognizing women who are making a tremendous impact in their local communities.

Sonia works diligently on behalf of MEC students, working to secure scholarship funding for dozens, annually.  This school year alone, she secured $50,000 in a Matching Donor Drive, $25,000 from Sprint for Study Abroad scholarships, $50,000 from Voya Financial for Elite Scholars and $17,000 for the Pinnacle Awards and Scholarship luncheon.  She has been honored by numerous organizations and former employers for her community service and fundraising efforts, including the Caribbean American Chamber of Commerce & Industry in 2009.

“This recognition, while invigorating, is quite humbling.  How auspicious to be given the opportunity to bring Medgar Evers College to the attention of a national TV audience! I’m all about raising monies for scholarships,” Sonia stated.

On August 17th, she and a guest will be invited to a hospitality reception prior to the Liberty’s final home game at Madison Square Garden.

Join us in congratulating Sonia on this tremendous honor!
