Baruch College Hosts CUNY Center for Student Entrepreneurship Demo Day

NEW YORK, NY-January 12, 2014 – Student entrepreneurs from the City University of New York presented their best pitch for a chance to win up to $15,000 at the CUNY Center for Student Entrepreneurship Demo Day, held at Baruch College on January 8.

Demo Day was the final step for the first cohort of student entrepreneurs completing the CUNY Center for Student Entrepreneurship incubator program. The incubator program assists students in starting their own businesses, creates jobs for students and stiumlates business growth and economic development in New York City. The Center’s Incubator offers a structured program in which CUNY students have access to resources geared toward helping them launch businesses. These resources include mentoring/coaching, workshops, workspace, community, funding and connections.

Remarks were presented by: John Clark, Acting University Executive Director of the Office of Business and Industry Relations at CUNY; Stuart Schulman, Professor of Management at Baruch College; Lou Ann Flanders-Stec, Administrative Director of the Center for Student Entrepreneurship; and Judy Spitz, Vice President and Chief Information Officer for Verizon.

Student entrepreneurs presented their business ideas to a panel of judges that included: Angela Haines, Managing Director of Golden Seeds; Dave Famolari, Director of Verizon Ventures; Dimitris Kouvaros, Head of Business Development at Huddlemetrics; Peter Crysdale, Founder/CEO of StrategyHack; and Zach Yeskel, Product Manager for Google.

 

The final results from the presentations were:

First Place (winner of $15,000): Teslab (formerly Tesla Truck), a cutting edge mobile workshop and maker-space, bringing the richness and depth of creating something with your hands, to schools, communities and a street corner near you.

Second Place (winner of $5,000): Cleanly, an online platform and mobile app that provides simple on-demand laundry and dry-cleaning delivery in NYC.

 

Honorable Mentions ($2,500 each)

Advyzr, a mobile application that utilizes user-submitted academic goals in collaboration with user scheduling preferences to produce class schedules and make “smart” course recommendations.

Pomegrante Lab, an online learning tool to provide solutions for disengaged, urban learners and new teachers.
