Dr. Derrick Griffith

“The City University of New York deeply mourns the tragic death of Dr. Derrick Griffith, Dean of Student Affairs and Enrollment Management of Medgar Evers College, a beloved member of our community who died in the  Amtrak derailment that took place earlier this week.  Dr. Griffith was well-known throughout the CUNY system, the City of New York and beyond for his exemplary leadership in education, including his outstanding service as the Founding Principal of the CUNY Preparatory Transitional High School.  He served in a number of senior administrative capacities at Medgar Evers College in both the academic and student services offices, and he recently completed his doctoral studies at The CUNY Graduate Center.  Dr. Griffith was also known by many through the high esteem expressed about his work and character by his many admiring colleagues.  They were inspired by his profound dedication to the education of underrepresented youth in economically disadvantaged communities.  Most recently, he accepted membership in a University working group focusing on men of color and enhanced educational success strategies.  We extend our deepest sympathies and condolences to his family.  Dr. Griffith will be sorely missed by all who benefited from his life’s work on behalf of the education of the people, all the people.”
