NEW YORK, NY – May 20, 2015 – Baruch College announced today that Abhinaya Swaminathan and Sonja Kostich are this year’s Valedictorian and Salutatorian, respectively. They will join their fellow graduates for the 2015 Commencement Ceremony on June 3, 2015, at the Barclays Center, beginning at 10:00 a.m.
Valedictorian Abhinaya Swaminathan is graduating with a Bachelor of Arts in Economics, Philosophy and Political Science, with a GPA of 3.93. She was a Macaulay Honors College student, and will start at Harvard Law School in the fall, where she plans to prepare for a career in international law. She moved to New York from Bangalore, India, six years ago.
She said her fellow students played an important role in her academic success. “I have met the most incredibly motivated and talented students who have inspired me to work harder and contribute more to the people around me. I also really benefitted from the culture at Baruch, where almost every student pursues a variety of interests both on and off-campus, because it has made me a more well-rounded person.”
Salutatorian Sonja Kostich is graduating with a Bachelor of Business Administration, majoring in Accounting. She had a GPA of 3.96, and will start next month as a financial analyst at Goldman Sachs. She was a professional ballet and modern dancer for more than 20 years before deciding to get her bachelor’s degree.
“In my mid-thirties I co-founded and co-directed my own modern dance company, called OtherShore,” Kostich said. “It was rewarding but challenging without the benefit of any business background or education. This, combined with a desire to discover and pursue an equally fruitful post-dance career, encouraged me to attend Baruch.” She was born in South Korea and raised in Minneapolis, MN.
As previously announced, the Commencement speaker will be Errol Louis, NY1’s political anchor and host of “Inside City Hall.” Honorary degree recipients will be David Krell (MBA ’71), Founder and Chairman of International Securities Exchange, who will receive a Doctor of Humane Letters degree; and Luis Alberto Moreno, President, Inter-American Development Bank (IDB), who will receive a Doctor of Letters degree.
