Professor Vilna Bashi Treitler (GC/Baruch, Sociology) co-authored an Al Jazeera America editorial that explores why Americans of color are only about half as likely to visit U.S. national parks as whites.
The editorial, “Why America’s National Parks Are So White,” calls on the National Park Service to make parks more welcoming to all Americans.
The piece is in response to a New York Times op-ed published earlier this month.
“African-Americans are less likely to visit parks for fear of racist treatment by mostly white park rangers, gate agents, and other park staffers,” Treitler and her co-authors wrote. “It is therefore critical to assess and eliminate these inherent biases that exclude people of color from outdoor public spaces.”
