HUD Secretary to Give Keynote Address at York Graduation

Honorable Julian Castro, Secretary of the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development, will be the commencement speaker at York College, CUNY’s 46th Commencement Exercises on Friday, June 3, 2016.

Mr. Castro, the former mayor of San Antonio, Texas, was appointed by President Barack Obama in 2014 as the nation’s 16th HUD Secretary. There he oversees 8,000 employees and a budget of $46 billion, to achieve HUD’s mission of “expanding opportunity for all Americans.” Like Mr. Castro, most of York’s students are the children or grandchildren of immigrants. Some, including the valedictorian, are themselves, immigrants. Ms. Kalu Eunice Udensi, a native of Nigeria, is graduating with the Bachelor of Science in Pharmaceutical Science. She is York’s fifth consecutive valedictorian with ties to the Chemistry department.

“I am delighted that Secretary Castro is taking time out of what I imagine must be a  jam-packed schedule, to address our graduates,” said Dr. Marcia V. Keizs, president of York College. “As the Jamaica Now Plan is being implemented with leadership from our Borough President Melinda Katz, having Julian Castro, the HUD Secretary in Jamaica, Queens is fortuitous timing not just for the college, but for the larger community as well. We look forward to his message on June third.”

The Commencement exercises will take place on the lawn of the Health and Physical Education Complex from 9:00 am to noon.
