NEW YORK, NY-September 16, 2016 – The Sandra Kahn Wasserman Jewish Studies Center at Baruch College presents a free screening of Defiance, a 2008 film starring Daniel Craig, Live Schreiber, and Jamie Bell, on Wednesday, September 21 at 6:30 p.m. This event is open to the public.
Based on the true story, the World War II drama/thriller is set during the occupation of Belarus by Nazi Germany. The film tells the dramatic story of a group of Jews in Belarus who successfully defied the Nazis, hid in the forest, and maintained a self-contained society while losing only about 50 of their approximately 1,200 members.
After the film screening, Aron (Bielski) Bell will share his personal story and answer questions. Only a preteen when the Nazis stormed his farming town in Belarus, Bell, now 89, was the youngest of the Bielski partisans who led the resistance effort and provided a safe haven for vulnerable Jews who managed to flee into the forests.
The film Defiance chronicles these rescuers, the largest armed resistance of Jews by Jews during World War II.
