Queens College Named a Top Producer of U.S. Fulbright Students

In the Past Three Years, 12 QC Grads Have Received This Prestigious Award —

FLUSHING, NY, February 23, 2017 – The U.S. Department of State’s Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs recently named Queens College as one of the U.S. colleges and universities that produced the most 2016-2017 Fulbright U.S. Students. The highly competitive Fulbright Program is the U.S. government’s flagship international educational exchange program. Top-producing institutions are highlighted annually in the national publication, The Chronicle of Higher Education.

Queens College has had multiple Fulbright winners every year since 2013, with a total of 12 graduates receiving the honor in the past three years alone—an unusual achievement.  During that same three-year period, the college was also annually named a top Fulbright Producer.

Three students from Queens College won Fulbright awards for 2016-2017 in its category of “Master’s Institutions.”  Linda Mathew, who holds a Master’s degree in Education, is currently teaching English in Thailand. Yvette Deane, who graduated last year with BA degrees in both sociology and political science, is conducting independent research at the Hebrew University on the role of education in furthering dialogue and understanding between Israelis and Palestinians.  And Shani Small, who earned a BA in psychology, is at the University of Sheffield in England, using her Fulbright grant to study global justice.

Noting that the Fulbrights are among the most prestigious awards in academia, President Félix V. Matos Rodríguez said, “I am deeply proud of our recent graduates for receiving this honor, but I am also inspired that all three are committed to serving others in the spirit of the motto of Queens College: “We learn so that we may serve.”
