Kingston, Jamaica native, and Kingsborough Community College sophomore Tatyana Mills was named a National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) Outdoor National Athlete of the Week on March 28. The Award was given by U.S Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association. Tatyana earned the award for her performance at the Winthrop ADIDAS Invitational this past weekend.
Tatyana, who competed in three events, came up big in each. She ran a 24.67 in the 200 meters and a 55.44 in the 400 meters, placing 3rd and 2nd, respectively, at the meet. For the season, no NJCAA Division III woman has run a faster time in either event. Additionally, Mills competed in the 4×400 relay, helping her squad run a time of 3:58.05, a mark that stands as the fastest at the NJCAA Division III level this year.
In addition to continuing her track career, the Liberal Arts major plans to complete her studies at a four-year institution in either Science or Sports Management.
About the National Athlete of the Week Award
The National Athlete of the Week is an award selected and presented by the US Track & Field and Cross-Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) Communications Staff at the beginning of each week. The recognition is awarded to 10 collegiate outdoor track and field athletes (male and female for each of the three National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) divisions and the two in NJCAA). The award seeks to highlight the very best times, marks and scores on a week-to-week basis, and also performances that were significant on the national landscape and the latest in a series of strong outings. Quality of competition, suspenseful finishes, and other factors will also play a role in the decision. Nominations are open to the public.
