For individuals with chronic illnesses such as high-blood pressure and diabetes, the need for qualified kidney care professionals is essential for people living with End-Stage Renal Disease (ESRD) or kidney failure. To fill this service gap, Kingsborough Community College (KCC) partnered with Dialysis 4 Career, which provides educational opportunities in hemodialysis training to offer its new Hemodialysis Technician & Exam Prep course. This 100-hour course provides students with comprehensive training to become Certified Hemodialysis Technicians (CHT).
“The addition of the Hemodialysis Technician test preparation training to our Healthcare Institute speaks to our commitment to the community and workforce development initiatives,” said KCC Continuing Education, Workforce Development, and Strategic Partnerships Vice President Dr. Reza Fakhari. “It addresses the need for medical professionals who deal with chronic illnesses while also providing access to opportunities for careers in healthcare.”
Students will learn how to operate dialysis equipment and monitor patient vital signs–key skills for working in a dialysis facility. The course ends with a class session focused on terminology and test-taking tips in preparation for the national certifying examination. Students who complete the course have an opportunity to receive hands-on training experience via an externship with DaVita, Inc., a leading provider of kidney care in the United States. Registration is now open for spring 2017; certificate classes begin on Saturday, April 22nd.
