LaGuardia Community College Celebrates CUNY Month with Educational and Cultural Events Throughout November

October 28th, 2009 | LaGuardia Community College

October 27, 2009–November will see a potpourri of educational activities and cultural events at LaGuardia Community College as part of CUNY Month—a University-wide celebration where all CUNY campuses will be hosting a wide range of educational programs and events for city residents.

Scheduled are open houses, information sessions, and tours for high school students, recent graduates, and transfer students who are interested in learning about the college’s academic programs, educational opportunities, admissions policy, and financial aid packages. Also included in the line-up are theater performances, conferences and short story readings and discussions.

The theme of CUNY Month this year is “The Success Express.” “LaGuardia Community College is surely riding the ‘Success Express,’” said Dr Gail O. Mellow, President of LaGuardia Community College. “Our enrollment is surging as an increasing number of city residents are discovering that the College is the ticket to higher education and a bright future. Here our students, who make up one of the most diverse student populations in the nation, are taught in a nurturing and supportive environment by an outstanding group of faculty.”

Among LaGuardia’s student stars who jumped on the Success Express, is Erica Nickle who went from the practical nursing certificate program to the nursing degree program and is now working in Brookdale Hospital’s operating room. And there is James Moss who is enrolled in the criminal justice program where he will get his associate degree at LaGuardia and then transfer to John Jay College of Criminal Justice for his bachelor’s degree. Also on board is Virginia Ramirez, ’07, who developed her English skills in LaGuardia’s ESL program, went on to earn her Associate degree in Theater and Communication at the College and is now working toward her Bachelor’s in Broadcast Journalism at Brooklyn College. Baba Boubacar, a native of Niger, is pursuing his Associate degree in International Business at LaGuardia, with his hopes set on earning a Bachelor’s at Baruch or City College.

All the events will be held in the college’s main building at 31-10 Thomson Avenue, Long Island City. For more information on the CUNY Month events and to make a reservation call (718) 482-5000 or visit LaGuardia’s CUNY Month page: http://www.laguardia.edu/CUNYmonth/
