Medgar Evers College Celebrates CUNY Month with an Exciting Event Line-Up for Students, Professionals, and the Community

CUNY Month is a University-wide, annual celebration of the people and programs highlighting many aspects of The City University of New York each November. In recognition of CUNY Month, this November, Medgar Evers College will showcase a an exciting line-up of events and attractions to current and prospective students, professionals, and the community. Medgar Evers College events include cultural activities, lectures, notable speakers, training opportunities, and more, that display the wealth of opportunities available through the campus. The calendar of events includes:

MONDAY, NOVEMBER 2. COLLEGE BLOOD DRIVE, 11 a.m. – 4:30 p.m., in front of the Bedford Building, 1650 Bedford Avenue, Brooklyn. The Medgar Evers College Freshman Year Program and Office of Student Life & Development will sponsor a blood drive for faculty, staff and students to donate blood to the New York Blood Center. The Center needs nearly 2,000 donors daily to maintain an adequate blood supply. Four million Americans benefit from life-saving transfusions each year and 1 out of 3 people will need a life-saving transfusion at some point during their lifetime. MONDAY, NOVEMBER 2. BLACK SOLIDARITY DAY, 11:30 a.m. – 12:45 p.m. and 6 p.m. – 8 p.m., Founders Auditorium, 1650 Bedford Avenue, Brooklyn. The Medgar Evers College Office of Student Life & Development and the Freshman Year Program present Black Solidarity Day, observed yearly on the Monday before Election Day to remind the nation and people of African descent across the Diaspora of the collective strength and political power of the black community. MONDAY, NOVEMBER 2. SEEK STUDENT PANEL DISCUSSION: Making the Grade at Medgar Evers College, 11:30 a.m. – 12:45 p.m., S-Bldg., Room 122, 1637 Bedford Avenue, Brooklyn. Search for Education, Elevation, and Knowledge (SEEK) first-semester freshman, SEEK Student Association members and invited guests will participate in a student-run assembly.

WEDNESDAY, NOVEMBER 4. “BAD BOYS DO GRAD: PREPARING MEN OF COLOR FOR GRADUATE AND PROFESSIONAL DEGREES,” 11:30 a.m. – 12:45 p.m., S-Bldg, Room 107, 1637 Bedford Avenue, Brooklyn. The Male Development and Empowerment Center will host a workshop titled “Bad Boys Do Grad: Preparing Men of Color for Graduate and Professional Degrees” providing important information for undergraduate students planning to attend graduate school. Academic Advisor Stephen Epps and Professor of Business and Public Administration Levar Burke will discuss entrance exams, classes to take, GPA requirements, faculty recommendations, internships, and establishing mentor-mentee relationships. All undergraduate students – sophomores in particular – are encouraged to attend. This event is free and open to the public; refreshments will be served. WEDNESDAY, NOVEMBER 4. ATHLETICS OPEN FORUM, 11:30 p.m. – 12:45 p.m. Founders Auditorium, 1650 Bedford Avenue, Brooklyn. The Department of Athletics and Intramurals, invites all students to come learn more about its programs in NCAA Division III, CUNYAC, ECAC and VWAC. There will be a question and answer session as well an opportunity to meet Cougar athletic stars. FRIDAY, NOVEMBER 6. COUNSELOR INFORMATION SESSION, 9 a.m. – 1 p.m., S-Bldg, 1637 Bedford Avenue, Brooklyn. The Medgar Evers College Office of Admissions and Recruitment will hold a Counselor Information Session specifically for high school guidance counselors, GED coordinators, College-Bound program coordinators, and Veterans coordinators providing a wealth of information about the College and its offerings. WEDNESDAY, NOVEMBER 11. TRUE COLORS: A PERSONAL SUCCESS COURSE, 11:30 a.m. – 12:45 p.m., President’s Conference Center (B-1008), 1650 Bedford Avenue, Brooklyn. The Medgar Evers College Office of Student Life & Development invites you to attend “True Colors: A Personal Success Course,” an interactive, lively performance allowing participants to experience aspects about ‘Who We All Are’ in a lighthearted, theatrical presentation that will have everyone laughing as they recognize themselves and others using the colors orange, green, blue and gold to differentiate four basic personality types. The Department of Athletics and Intramurals, in collaboration with the Radio Nation club, presents an event saluting the Fall 2009 Cougar sports teams. Filled with giveaways and prizes, Medgar Madness is a great opportunity to show your school spirit and spent time with student athletes, cheerleaders and the college community. SATURDAY, NOVEMBER 14. ONE-MAN POET/PERFORMER SHOW, 5 p.m. – 7 p.m. B-1008, 1650 Bedford Avenue, Brooklyn. The Medgar Evers College Male Development and Empowerment Center and Poet’s and Writer’s Magazine present “You a Man Now?” by poet/performer Mo Beasley, a spoken word-theatre experience putting a new spin on the urban male coming of age story. Set in the late 1980s, the tale attempts to demystify the strong black single mother, who is often deified in the black community, and the street hustlers who are demonized and glorified for all the wrong reasons. The event will be followed by a community round-table discussing the challenges of and providing possible insights for single mothers.

MONDAY, NOVEMBER 16. SURF YOUR WAY TO SCHOLARSHIP DOLLARS, 11:30 a.m. – 12:45 p.m. S-107, 1637 Bedford Avenue, Brooklyn, NY. The Male Development and Empowerment Center at Medgar Evers College presents a seminar focusing on how to find college scholarship money using the Internet. Presenters Stephen Epps and David Duncan of Scholarship America will discuss: A) the best free online scholarship databases to search; B) professional organizations and associations that provide money for specific majors; C) avoiding scholarship scams; D) understanding the terms and wording of financial aid; and E) finding corporations and foundations looking for students to support in Brooklyn. WEDNESDAY, NOVEMBER 18 – FRIDAY, NOVEMBER 20. CRIMINAL JUSTICE SYMPOSIUM
, 9 a.m. – 5 p.m. 1534 Bedford Avenue – 2nd Floor Lecture Hall. Seminars will be taught by Dr. Divine Pryor and Mr. Eddie Ellis, M.P.S., nationally- and internationally-recognized experts in the field of criminal justice reform. First-day seminars include Crime and Punishment in Urban America, Parole and Probation, and Community Policing; a question-and-answer session will follow. Second-day seminars cover Prison Programs and Release Preparation, Pre-Release, Transitional Services and Family Reunification, The Prison Experience, and Law Enforcement in Urban Communities. The final day will cover Economics, Crime and Community Development, Crime Mapping and Analysis, Research Methods in Law Enforcement, and Forensic Science. Seminars are open to community or faith-based service providers, law enforcement officers, social service workers, educators, government agency personnel, attorneys, students and community residents. Seminars run consecutively.

WEDNESDAY, NOVEMBER 18. CARIBBEAN MALE SYMPOSIUM, 9 a.m. – 4 p.m. B-1008, 1650 Bedford Avenue, Brooklyn. A symposium focusing on Caribbean males in the U.S. and examining them in three panel discussions with respect to politics, education and criminal justice. Invited keynote speaker is Dr. Ivy Law Griifith, Provost of York College, CUNY.

THURSDAY, NOVEMBER 19. EXPLORE, ETHIOPIA, 11:30 a.m. – 12:45 p.m. S-Bldg Lobby, 1637 Bedford Avenue, Brooklyn, NY. In celebration of the 1st Annual International Education Week, take a trip to the past! Explore Ethiopian coffee ceremony. THURSDAY, NOVEMBER 19. FILM, 6:15 p.m. Founders Auditorium, 1650 Bedford Avenue, Brooklyn, NY. Medgar Evers College Film & Culture Series presents “Cultivating, Assimilating, Co-opting Culture” featuring the film The Only Good Indian. Set in Kansas during the early 1900s, a teenaged Native American boy is taken from his family and forced to attend a distant Indian “training” school to assimilate into White society. Open Mic at 6:30 p.m. Film begins at 7 p.m.

FRIDAY, NOVEMBER 20. Memoirs of Note, 6 p.m. – 8 p.m. President’s Conference Center (Rm. 1008), 1650 Bedford Avenue, Brooklyn, NY. The Center for Black Literature, Center for Women’s Development, and the Male Development and Empowerment Center at Medgar Evers College, City University of New York, invite all to hear the works of Asha Bandele, author of Something Like Beautiful, and E. Ethelbert Miller, author of The 5th Inning in a reading and discussion.


SATURDAY, NOVEMBER 21. COLLEGE OPEN HOUSE
, 11 a.m. – 3 p.m., S-Bldg, 1637 Bedford Avenue, Brooklyn, NY. The Medgar Evers College Office of Admissions will hold an Open House providing prospective students an opportunity to meet the faculty, tour the facilities, attend a financial aid workshop (1 p.m.), and learn more about the many excellent academic programs and opportunities available at Medgar Evers College. SATURDAY, NOVEMBER 21. CUNY CITIZENSHIP EVENT, 11 a.m. – 3 p.m. (Doors close at 2 p.m.) Cafeteria – 1150 Carroll St., Brooklyn, NY. This is a FREE Citizenship Application Assistance Event sponsored by the City University of New York and Carib News. Experienced lawyers and other immigration professionals will be on-site for one-on-one evaluations of citizenship application readiness. Documents to bring include: Green card, all passports since obtaining green card, marital history*, children’s information* (date of birth, A#, addresses), criminal history*, Employment history for the last five or three years*, and home addresses for the last five or three years. About Medgar Evers College, CUNY

Medgar Evers College was founded in 1969 through the efforts from educators and community leaders in central Brooklyn. The College is named after Medgar Wiley Evers, a Mississippi-born black civil rights activist who was assassinated on June 12, 1963. The College is divided into four schools: The School of Business; The School of Professional and Community Development; The School of Liberal Arts and Education; and The School of Science, Health, and Technology. Through these Schools, the College offers 29 associate and baccalaureate degree programs, as well as certificate programs in fields such as English, Nursing, and Accounting. Medgar Evers College also operates several co-curricular and external programs and associated centers such as the Male Development and Empowerment Center, the Center for Women’s Development, the Center for Black Literature, and The DuBois Bunche Center for Public Policy.
