Representatives from Medgar Evers College, CUNY will be a part of The City University of New York’s float in the 90th Annual New York City Veterans Day Parade on Wednesday, November 11, starting off from 23rd Street and 5th Avenue at 11:00 a.m. and marching north along 5th Avenue to 57th Street. Medgar Evers joins 10 other CUNY schools, and nearly 23,000 participants, in an event that includes military vehicles, floats, bands and horse cavalries. In recent years, CUNY’s participation in the parade has grown and the CUNY float will be fourth in line in the first half of the parade.
Since 1919 the parade has brought New Yorkers and Americans together to honor all those who served in the armed forces. From modest beginnings, the parade has taken on national significance and is a ritual for hundreds of thousands of New Yorkers, Armed Service members, and their families.
“Our College is proud to participate in this important event acknowledging all U.S. veterans’ service and defense of freedom around the world,” said recently appointed Medgar Evers Veterans Affairs Advisor Roy Derick Hinton. “Medgar Evers is renewing its commitment to increasing enrollment of student veterans and encouraging their participation in community activities.”
Earlier this fall, the Medgar Evers College Veterans Affairs Department held a workshop where student veterans received important information about Guaranteed Reserve Forces Duty Scholarships for those participating in the Senior ROTC Program, and the Simultaneous Membership Program, a volunteer officer training program allowing Army National Guard members to participate in the Advanced ROTC Program. Attendees also learned how to become involved in the College’s Veterans Students Club.
