In celebration of Puerto Rican Heritage Month, the New York City Hispanic Chamber of Commerce and the Eugenio María de Hostos Community College Foundation hosted a “Meet and Greet Networking Reception” to honor President Félix V. Matos Rodríguez on the evening of Tuesday, November 24, 2009.
At this event held in the college’s art gallery, President Matos Rodríguez was presented with the Chamber’s Educational Leadership Award for contributions to academia through his publications, his directorship of the Center for Puerto Rican Studies (”El Centro”) at Hunter College, and his current role as president of Hostos.
In accepting this award from Nick Lugo, President and Founder of the Hispanic Chamber, President Matos Rodríguez reaffirmed his commitment to forging collaborative partnerships with the business community so that Hostos can be a primary conduit for the development of human resources:
“Hostos is open for business, and we welcome all business leaders to our campus. We look forward to helping them meet their personnel training needs by developing an educated workforce for this community. Many students come to Hostos primarily to obtain an associate’s degree or a certificate that will enable them to find a job, but we make certain that when they leave, they’ve gained a multifaceted education as well.”
Co-sponsored by Casa de Vinos, the reception was attended by approximately a hundred guests, including Tonio Burgos, former Deputy Mayor Ninfa Segarra, former NYS Assemblyman Francisco Diaz, Teresa Santiago, Chairperson and Executive Director of the NYS Consumer Protection Board, and others from the fields of business, education, and allied health professions. Entertainment was provided by the Mike Freeman Trio (Latin jazz).
