On Saturday, Nov. 12 the United States Navy shall christen the USNS Medgar Evers (T-AKE-13) – a Lewis and Clark-class dry cargo/ammunition ship, named in honor of the College’s namesake -World War II veteran and civil rights icon – Medgar Wiley Evers (1925-1963). Dr. Myrlie Evers-Williams, widow of Medgar Evers and the ship’s sponsor, will ceremonially name the vessel by breaking the tradional bottle of champagne against its hull.

On Thursday, October 20, 2011, the College will host a retirement ceremony for Professor Safiya Bandele at 6pm to 8 pm in the Founders Auditorium – 1650 Bedford Ave., Brooklyn, NY 11225. Bandele, who also serves as Director of the College’s Center for Women’s Development, will be recognized by students, faculty, staff, and friends for her 34 years of service at the College. Acclaimed children’s book author and Medgar Evers College English Professor Tonya Hegamin is the winner of the 2012 “Sunshine” State Young Reader’s Award, for her teen novella, Pemba’s Song: A Ghost Story. The novella, coauthored by Marilyn Nelson, was written to sponsor homeless, self-taught historian Abraham Hajj – fictionalized in the book – as he sought to live his dream of studying the influence of African culture in Mexico.
On Tuesday, September 27, 2011, Medgar Evers College of The City University of New York will host its Founders, Visionaries and Alumni Dinner, themed “Sustaining the Vision and Fulfilling the Dream”, in a memorable evening featuring a keynote address delivered by world renowned comedian, author, activist, and actor, Dr. Bill Cosby. As part of a multidisciplinary effort to increase student involvement in social justice initiatives, four Medgar Evers College students have completed a summer internship program in the Brooklyn District Attorney’s Office where they learned what it takes to become an attorney from some of the borough’s top prosecutors.

Dr. Charles desBordes, Biology Professor at Medgar Evers College, CUNY, was awarded the 2011 Howard Hughes Medical Institute Fellowship. Dr. desBordes participated in the National Academies Summer Institute on Undergraduate Education in Biology at Yale University this past summer. This unique Institute provided the Professor of Biology an opportunity to model current research, mentoring and scientific teaching principles in order to develop innovative instructional skills that he will implement upon his return to the campus.

The NonProfit HelpDesk (NPHD), a division of the Jewish Community Council of Greater Coney Island, will be offering a class and workshop this fall semester in collaboration with the Adult and Continuing Education Department at Medgar Evers College. The NPHD is offering a class in Presentation Skills, as well as a workshop on Coaching Essentials. Both are highly interactive and offer practical, hands-on experience.
The Center for Black Literature at Medgar Evers College shall participate in the Sixth Annual Brooklyn Book Festival at Borough Hall and its environs on Sunday, September 18, 2011. Considered the largest free literary event in New York City, this Brooklyn Borough President Literary Council – sponsored festival shall feature an exciting array of literary stars including Terry McMillan, Jhumpa Lahiri, Walter Mosley, and Colson Whitehead, and many others.

Assemblyman Jeffries will discuss the importance of public service. Beginning in the fall 2011 semester, Triumphant Journeys coaching shall offer courses through the Medgar Evers College Adult Continuing Education program. “We are expanding both our geographic reach and our course content,” said Chaya Abelsky, principal of Triumphant Journeys. “This fall we will be offering programs on coaching for principals and teachers, and on a mind-body approach to coaching tools that anyone can use.”
