United States Navy to Christen Naval Ship USNS Medgar Evers, Nov. 12

On Saturday, Nov. 12 the United States Navy shall christen the USNS Medgar Evers (T-AKE-13) – a Lewis and Clark-class dry cargo/ammunition ship, named in honor of the College’s namesake -World War II veteran and civil rights icon – Medgar Wiley Evers (1925-1963). Dr. Myrlie Evers-Williams, widow of Medgar Evers and the ship’s sponsor, will ceremonially name the vessel by breaking the tradional bottle of champagne against its hull.

Acclaimed children’s book author and Medgar Evers College English Professor Tonya Hegamin is the winner of the 2012 “Sunshine” State Young Reader’s Award, for her teen novella, Pemba’s Song: A Ghost Story. The novella, coauthored by Marilyn Nelson, was written to sponsor homeless, self-taught historian Abraham Hajj – fictionalized in the book – as he sought to live his dream of studying the influence of African culture in Mexico.

Dr. Charles desBordes, Biology Professor at Medgar Evers College, CUNY, was awarded the 2011 Howard Hughes Medical Institute Fellowship. Dr. desBordes participated in the National Academies Summer Institute on Undergraduate Education in Biology at Yale University this past summer. This unique Institute provided the Professor of Biology an opportunity to model current research, mentoring and scientific teaching principles in order to develop innovative instructional skills that he will implement upon his return to the campus.

Triumphant Journeys Coaching to Offer Courses through Adult and Continuing Education at Medgar Evers College
