Gov. Andrew Cuomo approved creation of The New Community College – CUNY’s seventh community college and the University’s first new college in more than four decades – in a Sept. 20 letter to Education Commissioner John B. King Jr., Chancellor Matthew Goldstein has announced.

At its quarterly meeting held in New York on June 9, 2011, Carnegie Corporation of New York’s Board of Trustees approved 36 grants totaling $18,635,000.

It is a bold endeavor that aims to create the first new CUNY college in four decades, one that is quite different from its predecessors because it will require students to attend full time and only offer a limited number of majors.

The City University Board of Trustees of the City University of New York is expected to approve today the creation of the city’s first new community college in 40 years, with a preliminary home overlooking the scenic landmark Bryant Park in midtown.

Planning for the University’s new community college, opening in 2012, has kicked into high gear with the hiring of a founding president, six core faculty members and a registrar, the leasing of classroom space near Manhattan’s Bryant Park and the appointment of a vice chancellor charged with enhancing associate-degree education across the city.

Dr. Scott E. Evenbeck, a professor of psychology and dean of University College at Indiana University-Purdue University at Indianapolis, has been appointed the Founding President of The City University of New York’s new community college

For the past two years John Mogulescu, senior University dean for academic affairs and dean of the School of Professional Studies, has been in charge of developing a new, seventh community college for CUNY — one that will hopefully see more students succeed.

Community colleges are by nature pleasers and multitaskers. It’s in their DNA: They struggle to say no. They offer remedial classes alongside college course work.

Though many in academe have great interest in its plan to develop an experimental community college designed
specifically to maximize student success, the City University of New York is still more than a year away from having its much discussed vision become a reality.
