Chancellor’s Society Recognizes More Than 200 Top Donors

March 11, 2009 | Partners and Supporters

In recognition of the enormous impact of corporate, foundation and individual donors who have contributed gifts of $1 million and above during the first phase of the Invest in CUNY campaign, the university has established the Chancellor’s Society. The more than 200 donors in this group range from generous alumni and friends to major national foundations. Their gifts run the gamut from general support to endowed chairs, student scholarships and fellowships, innovative academic programs, advanced scientific research, to a broad array of community projects.

Many foundations and corporations included in the Chancellor’s Society have made generous gifts to two or more CUNY colleges and supported various program initiatives. Highlights of this university-wide philanthropy include:

  • The Starr Foundation, which funds numerous scholarships and provides general support to Baruch College, City College and Hunter College and centrally to the university;
  • New York Community Trust, which supports a range of academic programs at a dozen CUNY campuses
  • The Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, which has, through CUNY, created early college and international high schools throughout New York City;
  • The Ford Foundation, which supports academic initiatives and programs at eight CUNY colleges; the Carnegie Corporation of New York, which funds research across the university and support centers and institutes at several campuses;
  • The Andrew W. Mellon Foundation, which funds fellowships and scholarships at several CUNY colleges, including the Macaulay Honors College.
