The “Celebrating Our Partners” reception held on Jan 20 at The Alvin Ailey Studios was a tremendous success, bringing together one of the largest gatherings of CUNY supporters since the launch of the campaign in 2004. CUNY Chairperson Benno Schmidt and Chancellor Matthew Goldstein expressed their appreciation for the partnership of more than 400 institutional philanthropic donors whose generous support to the colleges of CUNY provides scholarships for students, endowments for faculty, and funding for programs.
Keynote speaker Ivan Seidenberg, Chairman of the Board and CEO of Verizon and a Lehman College alumnus, spoke of the need to reinvent New York’s economy around technology and challenged those present to help CUNY play a larger role in the future of the city. He noted that CUNY has taken steps in that direction. “Under Chancellor Goldstein, CUNY has made a good start by investing in growth fields like photonics, biotech and environmental science … creating an Advanced Science Research Center, which will open in 2012 … and stepping up efforts to commercialize research,” he said.
The Verizon Foundation has provided more than $2 million to the colleges of CUNY. See the following pages for excerpts of the Chancellor’s and Mr. Seidenberg’s remarks.
