CW11 SPRING INTERNSHIPS

CREATIVE SERVICES

Description: This internship will provide an opportunity to experience the fundamentals of Creative Services, how it relates to other departments at a television station, and ultimately, how it defines the stations on-air look. In addition, this internship will provide an opportunity to actively participate in the production of news promos. This internship is designed to marry course of study to hands-on experience. The intern will also have the opportunity to shadow professionals.
Requirements: The learning objectives and responsibilities are as follows:

News Intern
• Assist the News Topical producer with procuring tapes
• Help research developing stories
• Assist the producer to gather the materials needed to air night-time topicals

Department Intern
• Administrative duties as assigned
• Assist with organizing the tape library
• Learn how to write voice-over copy and baseball drop-in copy
• Log tapes
• Help keep track of all the incoming materials, and potentially assist with man-on-the-street shoots.
• Shadow in the Post-Production room, TKO, learning how to “tag and bag” spots,
• Learn the process of how a promo gets to air
• Shadow and observe how the writer/producers create spots, and how those spots are put together in the edit room.


INTERACTIVE/WEB

Description: This internship will provide an opportunity to experience the rigors of running a television website. Specifically, the intern will learn how the website interrelates to all other departments at a television station, how it connects the station to the community, and how it fits into the future of broadcast television. In addition, this internship will provide an opportunity to develop very eclectic skill sets from technical to communication. This internship is designed to help identify where course of study contributes to hands-on experience. The intern will participate in the daily production of cw11.com, as well as propose, create, and complete a special project.

The learning objectives and responsibilities are as follows:
Technical Skills
• Develop knowledge of the Tribune website production tool, Oxygen
• Develop skills working with digital photography and graphics using programs such as Photoshop & Image Ready
• Develop html code knowledge

News Skills
• Be aware of breaking news and be able to use relative website tools to maximize presentation for WPIX
• Interact with Newsday news paper and learn how to place news stories on the WPIX website — news, entertainment, sports, etc.
• Attend news meetings and assist web producer in developing interrelated content to accompany on-air news.

Communication
• Interact with ALL departments as per each department’s individual website needs: HR – Station Info & Jobs pages, Community Affairs – Community Calendar, content modules for locally produced content, Programming – Viewing guides, special needs, Creative Services – Web related promotions, contests, etc.
• Organize station mail
• Daily emails with content partners such as Feedroom, regarding matters of policy, content creation, and workflow.

Requirements: Interested candidates should have working knowledge of HTML and Photoshop. Web production experience, web writing/content is a plus. Students must have completed their sophomore year and be in good academic standing. With proper documentation, the internship can be for credit, but is not necessary; a stipend will also be paid. NEWS ROTATIONAL

Description: This internship will provide an opportunity to learn the methods and systems of the broadcast news business. The internship will focus on five areas: newsgathering, news production, features production, news library management and Sports – news production. In addition, this internship is designed to marry course of study to hands-on-experience. The intern will have the opportunity to shadow professionals.

The News gathering learning objectives and responsibilities are as follows:
Interns will study in the inner workings of the assignment desk, reporting in the field, and pre-production. At the assignment desk, they will make beat calls (calls to police and other authorities to gather news). They will also interact with the assignment editor, gathering and processing research materials. Interns will witness the breaking news process, assisting the Assignment Editor with assigning crews and coordinating reporters and stories. Interns will have the opportunity to shadow reporters in the field, learning the interview and story development process as well as learn production in the field.

The News Production learning objectives and responsibilities are as follows:
Interns will have the opportunity to work with writers and producers, who gather information over AP wires, by making research calls and coordinating information from the field. Participate in the news production process by assisting producers, directors and writers. Union rules limit how active interns can participate in production, therefore, the interns will be able to assist producers and writers by pulling file tape, reviewing graphics, and printing/distributing rundowns and scripts. The interns will make research calls, calls to crews in the field, work on the assignment and planning boards as well as gather “MOS” bites in the field. The interns will have the opportunity to shadow the director, distributing rundowns and coordinating production tapes and graphics.

The Features production learning objectives and responsibilities are as follows:
Participate in the production of feature segments, including the entertainment blocks, lifestyles segments, and live feature reporter segments – which includes making calls to PR/entertainment representatives. The interns may assist with coordinating live shots, pulling file tape and general duties of the line producer. In addition, the interns will be able to attend pitch meetings, and under the supervision of a segment producer, work on their own segments.

Requirements: Qualified students must be currently enrolled in an accredited college or university, undergraduate or graduate program, have completed their sophomore year and in good academic standing. The qualified intern must be enrolled in a parallel major in the field of Journalism, Broadcasting, Communications etc., as the internship is designed to provide hands-on experience as it relates to major course of study. The successful candidate will have completed courses in broadcasting, have a general understanding of a television station and have applicable internship and/or volunteer experience. With proper documentation, the internship can be for credit, but is not necessary; a stipend will also be paid. EOE

TRAFFIC

Description:
This internship will provide an opportunity to experience the fundamentals of Traffic and the synergy between Traffic, Sales, Programming and Engineering departments as it relates to on-air production and ultimately revenue growth. In addition, this internship is designed to combine study with hands-on experience. The intern will also have the opportunity to shadow professionals.

The learning objectives and responsibilities are as follows:
Sales/Engineering Departments
• Exposure to Sales Order Entry
• Learn about Commercial Instructions and tape receipt
• Assist with advertiser separation on log
• Assist with maintenance of Tape Library

Program Department
• Exposure to show scheduling
• Programming Sheet (Reading Louth screening sheets)
• Learn and understand difference between segments and commercial breaks

Qualified students must be currently enrolled in an accredited college or university, undergraduate or graduate program, have completed their sophomore year and in good academic standing. Local Community Affairs/Production
Description: This internship will provide an opportunity to experience the various facets of this division, how it relates to other departments at a television station, and how this department is responsible for maintaining a presence in the community as well as being accountable to our viewers in the tri-state area. The intern will be exposed to the following aspects; On-Air programming, Community outreach, Philanthropy and other measures employed in this department, which enables WPIX to affect the lives of those who watch us in a positive manner. In addition, this internship is designed to marry course of study to hands-on-experience. The intern will also have the opportunity to shadow professionals.

The learning objectives and responsibilities are as follows:

WPIX Station Outreach

• Learn how to document new contacts and recommend ideas for department and station development

Public Service Announcements
• Learn how to enter Public Service Announcements into the Database System (Enterprise)
• Help package and tag approved Public Service Announcements from outside agencies into station’s rotation

CARE FOR KIDS
• Participate in CARE FOR KIDS Advisory Committee as well as coordinate and assist in various facets of CARE FOR KIDS events

On-Air Production

• Assist in the various facets of production and development of specials, parades, special events, campaigns and public service announcements
• Assist in the production of promotional videos for non-profit organizations

Administrative
• Cover phones in the department
• Distribution of mail
Other administrative responsibilities as assigned.
