SIX NEWS DESK POSITIONS AVAILABLE AT THE BERGEN RECORD
News editor, to manage the editors who produce the main news and local sections. This editor will work closely with the news director and newsroom management, as well as assignment, photo and graphics editors to ensure that the newsroom’s daily planning and production work culminate in a newspaper that meets the needs of our readers and a front page that sells the paper. He or she will oversee story selection and page design and sometimes do page layout, and collaborate with the copy desk to elicit lively, engaging headlines and captions. The successful candidate must have excellent news judgment, strong communication and organizational skills, customer and market focus and excellent problem-solving abilities. We’re looking for someone with a minimum of 10 years daily newspaper editorial experience with some time in a management or supervisory role.
Assistant news editor, to manage the early news-production shift, which has primary responsibility for Features and Travel sections and will edit copy and graphics for Business and other news sections and pages as needed. This editor will work closely with assigning editors and the photo and graphics departments to produce creative, appealing pages. Applicants must have strong communication and organizational skills, customer and market focus, excellent problem-solving abilities and a good understanding of the production process. Candidates should have a minimum of five years daily newspaper editorial experience with some time in a management or supervisory role.
Copy desk supervisor, to oversee editors who read copy, write headlines and photo captions and proof pages for our two daily newspapers and Web site. Applicants should have at least seven to eight years at a daily newspaper, strong communication skills, excellent headline-writing and coaching abilities, ability to handle a heavy workload quickly and juggle multiple tasks under deadline pressure and solid grounding in grammar, style, libel, current affairs and the political process. Reporting experience and management experience are highly desirable.
Assistant copy desk supervisor, to work with copy desk chief in overseeing copy editors for our two daily newspapers and Web site. Applicants should have at least five years at a daily newspaper, strong communication skills, excellent headline-writing and coaching abilities, ability to handle a heavy workload quickly and juggle multiple tasks under deadline pressure and solid grounding in grammar, style, libel, current affairs and the political process. Reporting experience is highly desirable.
Copy production editor, Â to edit copy, design pages, and/or work as a news editor or in the slot. This is a multipurpose job that puts a premium on flexibility and versatility. Applicants should have at least five years of experience at a daily newspaper, strong copy editing and headline skills, sound news judgment, and a good eye for page design. Layout experience required; Quark proficiency is strongly preferred.
Copy editor: Applicants should have at least two years of experience at a daily newspaper and be able to demonstrate command of English language and grammar, libel and current affairs, and familiarity with Associated Press stylebook. Excellent headlines and captions a must. Some reporting experience preferred; Quark experience helpful.
