CUNY School of Law Raises the Bar

December 11, 2006

Students at The City University of New York School of Law have posted the highest bar examination pass rates in the 23-year history of the School, according to recently-released results of the July 2006 New York State Bar Examination.

The 77% success rate for first-time takers improves on CUNY Law’s score last year by 15 percentage points. It represents the strategic and concerted effort by the School and the University to strengthen those aspects of the academic program that target the skills and knowledge tested by the Bar.

The increased Bar passage rate at this unique school bodes well for the many New Yorkers unable to afford the high cost of legal representation. With a higher percentage of its students pursuing public interest employment than any other law school in the country, CUNY School of Law is first in the nation in graduating lawyers who choose public service over personal gain.

Excellence and public service go hand-in-hand at CUNY School of Law. The school’s clinical program is consistently ranked in the top five clinical programs in the nation, and it assists over 1,000 impoverished individuals each year with their pressing legal needs.

The increased Bar passage rate at CUNY Law also bodes well for the diversity of the legal profession, particularly in New York. CUNY School of Law graduates a higher percentage of lawyers from communities underrepresented in the profession than any other law school in the State.

Noting that the statewide Bar passage rate in July of 2006 was the highest rate in the last ten years, CUNY Law’s new dean, Michelle J. Anderson said, “This is no time to rest on our laurels. We are committed to academic excellence and continued improvement in everything we do.” Dean Anderson is moving forward with initiatives to insure CUNY Law’s future graduates are even better prepared to meet the challenge of the two-day Bar Examination.
