2009 Joseph Doherty Civil Rights Fellowship Winners

November 9, 2009

Michele Lampach and Jillian Sebastian are the winners of the 2009 Joseph Doherty Civil Rights Fellowship. The annual fellowship offered by the Irish Law Students Association (ILSA) at CUNY Law assists students whose interest lie in civil rights in the United States and abroad.

Michele Lampach (3L) interned this past summer at the Open Society Justice Initiative in Phnom Phen, Cambodia. Michele worked with local attorneys as well as non-profit organizations as a trial monitor to the hybrid international and domestic tribunal responsible for bringing Khmer Rouge war criminals to justice.

Jillian Sebastian (2L) interned at the New York Civil Liberties Union in the advocacy department which strives to integrate proactive legal work in communities. Jillian conducted research on many issues including military recruitments in NYC schools, teen health initiatives and GLTBQ youth rights.

Congratulations to this year’s winners who each receive an award of $1,000. ILSA would like to thank all members of the community, including alumni, who support the fellowship.
