In their first year of law school in 2008, CUNY Law alums Erin Tomlinson and Reka Bala, who just graduated this year, worked on helping to exonerate two innocent men wrongly held in prison for more than 30 years for a charge of murder they did not commit. Tomlinson and Bala had several visits with Bobby Ray Dixon, one of the wrongly accused men, and worked diligently on his exoneration.
The two students worked on the case through CUNY Law’s Mississippi Project, which was started by students in 1994. Each year, during inter-sessions, CUNY Law students travel to Mississippi and Louisiana to work with community and public interest groups such as the Mississippi Workers’ Center for Human Rights, the ACLU of Mississippi, and the Innocence Project of New Orleans.
