SEVA Immigrant Community Advocacy Project, co-founded by alum Gurpal Singh (’08), will receive the 2011 Union Square Social Justice Award. The Union Square Awards identify activists, community organizers, advocates and service providers across New York City neighborhoods who are building organizations addressing homelessness and hunger; HIV/AIDS prevention, education and treatment; youth leadership and organizing; family and community development; and conflict resolution, among other concerns.
SEVA uses grassroots organizing, leadership development, civic participation, and campaigns to address the needs of South Asian and West Indian communities in Queens. As a recipient of the award, SEVA will receive a grant for $50,000.
