Students in the Immigrant and Refugee Rights Clinic and Alums Help CUNY/Daily News Education Effort

April 27, 2012

In April 2012 students in the Immigrant and Refugee Rights Clinic (IRRC) provided free, confidential information in English and Spanish to individuals around New York City facing immigration issues. Launched by the City University of New York in conjunction with the Daily News, the students answered questions under the supervision of IRRC Clinical Professors Alizabeth Newman and Liliana Yanez. CUNY Law alums working in immigration law also supported the effort. Lisa Reiner, Associate Director of CUNY Law’s Community Legal Resource Network (CLRN) and CUNY Law graduate, organized alumni participation.

“Through this experience, students had the opportunity to integrate the knowledge and skills they have acquired in the IRRC to best help the callers,” said Clinical Professor Newman, who also graduated from CUNY Law. “While the event is geared toward citizenship questions, caller inquiries explore all of immigration law,” she added.

The students participating were Ari Ambrose, Joseph Ramagli, Lili Biesemeyer, Kathryn Hutchinson, Elizabeth Kenney, Richard Bailey, Amanda Doroshow, Bradley Shumaker, Golden McCarthy, and Julia Rodriguez. IRRC staff, including Ayesha Yasmin, also participated.
