Tonya Gonnella Frichner (’87), president and founder of the American Indian Law Alliance, will receive an honorary degree from Colby College at its upcoming commencement ceremony.
Gonnella Frichner is a member of CUNY Law’s Board of Visitors. She is a lawyer and activist devoted to pursuing human rights for indigenous peoples, and she is a citizen of the Onondaga Nation, Snipe Clan, of the Six Nations Iroquois Confederacy, Haudenosaunee. She has worked closely with leaders of several American Indian nations, was North American regional representative to the United Nations Permanent Forum on Indigenous Issues, and has been legal and diplomatic counsel to indigenous delegations in virtually all UN forums affecting indigenous peoples.
