Katie Redmon (’13) Awarded Borchard Foundation Fellowshiop

June 20, 2013

Katie Redmon (’13) has been awarded a 2013 fellowship from theĀ Borchard Foundation Center on Law & Aging, whose mission is to help improve the quality of life for elderly people, including those who are poor or otherwise isolated by lack of education, language, culture, disability or other barriers. As a 2013-2014 Borchard Fellow, Katie will work with JASA/Legal Services for the Elderly in Queens, New York.

Together they will implement a courthouse project that provides free legal representation to elderly pro se tenants in Queens Housing Court. The goal of the project is to achieve long-term housing stabilization through the interdisciplinary use of legal representation and social services, allowing more elderly tenants to “age in place” at home. Katie will represent tenants identified by judges as potentially in need of social services. Katie’s full-time presence in the courthouse will allow her to work intimately with judges and court personnel to intervene in cases where at-risk elderly tenants are navigating eviction proceedings unaided.
