Victim Compensation: Prof. Goldscheid Speaks to National Journal

August 8, 2013

National Journal article examining the disparity in victim compensation after tragedies quotes Professor Julie Goldscheid.

“The contrast was just stark,” Goldscheid said, referring to the difference in compensation rates for different victims, calling it part of an “unfortunate history of a narrative about deserving and undeserving victims.”

Goldscheid writes and speaks widely about gender equality, with a particular focus on gender-based violence and economic equality. Before joining the CUNY faculty, she served as Acting Legal Director at Legal Momentum (formerly NOW Legal Defense and Education Fund). She spearheaded that organization’s legal work to end violence against women, which included defending the constitutionality of the civil rights remedy of the 1994 Violence Against Women Act in courts nationwide, and before the U.S. Supreme Court in United States v. Morrison.
