CUNY Law Receives National Diversity Award

October 18, 2013

NEW YORK—City University of New York (CUNY) School of Law has been named a recipient of the annual Higher Education Excellence in Diversity (HEED) Award from INSIGHT Into Diversity magazine. The HEED Award is the only national honor recognizing U.S. colleges and universities that demonstrate an outstanding commitment to diversity and inclusion.

“We are honored that INSIGHT into Diversity chose to recognize the diversity of our community,” said Michelle J. Anderson, dean of CUNY School of Law. “Our remarkable students, faculty, and staff are extraordinarily committed to ensuring that CUNY Law is an inclusive and welcoming community.”

HEED Award recipients were selected based on their institution’s exemplary diversity and inclusion initiatives, and ability to embrace a broad definition of diversity on their campuses, including gender, race, ethnicity, veterans, people with disabilities, and members of the LGBT community.

CUNY School of Law is one of the most diverse law schools in the nation. Nearly 45 percent of the student body are people of color, and 63 percent are women. More than 45 percent of students are first or second generation immigrants. Among CUNY Law faculty, 43 percent of are people of color, and 60 percent are women.

“We hope the HEED award serves as a way to honor those institutions of higher education that recognize the importance of diversity and inclusion as part of their everyday campus culture,” said Lenore Pearlstein, co-publisher of INSIGHT Into Diversity magazine.

Part of CUNY Law’s stated mission is to enhance the diversity of the legal profession. In working toward this goal, CUNY Law established the Pipeline to Justice program. Pipeline prepares underrepresented students to enter CUNY School of Law and supports them throughout their law school careers. In its first year alone, the Pipeline program accounted for a 20 percent increase in students of color among the incoming class.

Founded in 1983, CUNY School of Law is the premier public interest law school in the country. The school trains lawyers to serve the underprivileged and disempowered and to make a difference in their communities. A greater percentage of graduates from CUNY Law choose careers in public interest and public service than any other law school in the nation. PreLaw magazine ranks CUNY Law as the #1 law school in the nation for public interest, and National Jurist ranks the law school second in the nation for diversity. U.S. News & World Report ranks CUNY fourth in the nation for “Best Clinical Programs,” and in the top ten for diversity. The Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching has praised CUNY School of Law for being one of the few law schools in the country to prepare students for practice through integrated instruction in theory, skills, and ethics.
