Update on Subway Noise at PS 85

December 16, 2013

Professor Rebecca Bratspies and student fellows with CUNY Law’s Center for Urban Environmental Reform (CUER) have been working with parents at PS85 in Astoria, Queens, to address noise from nearby subway tracks that is affecting students’ learning and health.

Last week, the street in front of PS 85 was partially blocked off, and the MTA was working on the elevated tracks.

This follows last week’s New York Times story that focused on the noise of the tracks.

Prof. Rebecca Bratspies spoke with some of the workers who said they were replacing the tracks to make it less noisy. They also said another fix would be coming in 2015 when they would be able to move a switch in order to put rubber pads under the tracks.

Parents are planning a rally on Tuesday to draw attention to the issue.
