January 31, 2014

The Board of Judges of the United States District Court for the Southern District of New York (SDNY) has selected Judith C. McCarthy (’91) to serve as a magistrate judge for a term of eight years. She will serve on the bench at the Charles L. Brieant United States Courthouse in White Plains.

Ms. McCarthy currently serves as the Executive Vice President and General Counsel of the New York Power Authority, where she oversees a staff of 30 and administers a $6.5 million budget. Prior to her position at the Power Authority, she was an Assistant Attorney General-in-Charge at the New York State Attorney General’s Office in Westchester, First Deputy General Counsel at the New York City Human Resources Administration, and Deputy Assistant Chief of the General Litigation Division at the New York City Law Department. Ms. McCarthy received her J.D. from the CUNY Law School and her B.A. from Barnard College.

“The Board of Judges is delighted to welcome Judith McCarthy to the Southern District bench,” said Chief Judge Loretta A. Preska. “Her depth of legal experience and superb record as a litigator will make her an excellent Magistrate Judge, and we are lucky to have her on board.”

Full-time Magistrate Judges are appointed by District Court Judges to eight-year terms; they assist District Court Judges with the work of the court by facilitating the disposition of certain civil and criminal cases.
