New York, NY—Melanie F. Hart has joined the City University of New York (CUNY) School of Law as the new director of the Community Legal Resource Network (CLRN) and External Affairs.

Hart brings to CLRN more than 15 years of experience in nonprofit leadership, philanthropy, and legal business services. Most recently, she served as the Interim CEO at Legal Information for Families Today (LIFT), which enhances access to justice for children and families by providing legal information and community education, while promoting system-wide reform of the courts. Hart previously served as LIFT’s Chief Program Officer.

CUNY Law Dean Michelle J. Anderson said, “Melanie is an accomplished leader who will build on CLRN’s foundation to further support alumni in this challenging and evolving environment for lawyers.”

Before LIFT, Hart was the chief operating officer of a cultural organization in New York. She also served as Director of New Initiatives for a charter school management organization to successfully launch an accredited master’s degree program for teachers, and as Program Officer at the Victoria Foundation, which improves the lives of children and families in Newark, New Jersey. Her experience also includes serving as a corporate lawyer and in-house counsel with a Fortune 500 company, a policy analyst for the New York State Empire Development Corporation, and an adjunct professor.

Hart is a New York native. She is a graduate of University of Virginia School of Law, the Graduate School of Management & Urban Policy at the New School for Social Research, and Cornell University.

The Community Legal Service Network at CUNY Law works to address the unmet legal needs of New Yorkers through its various programs, including the nation’s first incubator program, the LaunchPad to Justice, and a robust CLE and professional development program.
